The Central Station

The station was build by the infamous Leopold the 2nd, and it was finished in 1905. The station has two main parts: the main building designed by L. Delacenserie, and the almost 200 meters long iron and glass vault designed by J. Van Asperen. Restoration of the station was started in 1993, and is still going on. The station has also been modified to be able to handle high- speed trains, and a new terminal for high-speed services should open before the end of 2008.

The central station has been decorated to the last tile both from the outside, and the inside. The interior of the station has been decorated with more than 20 different marbles and stones, which reflects the amount of money once put into it. The Antwerp central station is often said to be one of Europe's most beautiful stations.
